Devil Dog BBQ, Our Story

Mike Hamby, Owner, began cooking for fun many years ago and his passion for BBQ was ignited.

Mike spent 10 years in the Marine Corps, hence the name, Devil Dog BBQ, as Marines are known as Devil Dogs. Mike retired from the City of Houston Police Department after 32 years of service and now works for a private family in the personal protection field.

In 2002, Mike and a group of friends began competition cooking.  After one cook-off they realized they all had one thing in common, they all had prior military service. They came up with the team name, “The Grill Instructors” and their motto of “Serving Those, Serving US” was born.  They proudly competed with the intention of bringing awareness to our military branches and supporting them.

Over the years, the Grill Instructors supported events such as Homes For Our Troops, Wounded Warrior Project and Honor Flights.  In 2005, the Grill Instructors gathered several donors and cooked 3300 lbs of brisket, 1200 lbs of chicken, 800 lbs of sausage then flew out to 29 Palms, CA, Marine Corps Base and fed the 1st battalion, 23rd Marines (The Lone Star Battalion) Texas BBQ upon their return from a 9 month tour in Iraq.  In 2011, the Grill Instructors on a smaller scale took Texas BBQ to Camp Pendleton, California and fed over 1000 Marines returning from Afghanistan.

Mike started up Devil Dog BBQ & Catering in 2015, obtained a mobile unit to cater and do events. While traditional BBQ is always on the menu, Mike has expanded his abilities to cook more than just brisket, chicken & sausage. Mike also has smoked meatloaf [bacon wrapped and stuffed with provolone cheese], mac n cheese, chicken tenders with a peach/jalapeno pepper jelly glaze, sausage dogs, hamburgers, fettuccini alfredo, etouffe, chili, pork loin, pulled pork, smoked turkey, smoked ham, along with a variety of side dishes that are sure to please the pallet.

Devil Dog BBQ is a small business and yet is able to cater most any size event with a quality product.

Mike, along with his wife Karen, hope you will give Devil Dog BBQ a try!  We look forward to pleasing your taste buds!
